The war in Ukraine has been going on for almost three years, the war in the Middle East for almost 15 months. In both cases, people in Germany are unlikely to expect an end next year.

Will the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East end in 2025? Most people in Germany don’t believe in it. According to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, only 29 percent expect that the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 2022, will end next year. 49 percent don’t believe it, 22 percent don’t provide any information.

Those surveyed are even more pessimistic about the conflict in the Middle East. 57 percent do not believe in an end to the war, which began in October 2023 with Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel. However, 19 percent expect the war to end, 25 percent do not provide any information.

Majority sees war in Ukraine as biggest threat

56 percent of people in Germany consider the war in Ukraine to be the most threatening current conflict in the world. 16 percent say this about the war in the Middle East and 10 percent about the conflict between China and Taiwan. 19 percent provide no information on this.

Between December 20th and 23rd, YouGov surveyed 2,194 people who are representative of the population in Germany over the age of 18.

Trump wants to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours

Diplomatic efforts to end the Ukraine war increased in 2024 – especially after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election at the beginning of November. Trump announced during the election campaign that he wanted to end the war within 24 hours. He will be sworn in as president on January 20th. Negotiators from Israel and Hamas are currently negotiating a ceasefire in the Gaza war.
