Shortly before the end of his term in office, US President Biden is sending Ukraine further help in its defense against Russia.
The outgoing US President Joe Biden is providing further aid for Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia, worth a total of almost 2.5 billion US dollars (2.36 billion euros). These are funds that have already been approved by the US Congress. The aid includes weapons and ammunition worth $1.25 billion for the Ukrainian military as well as a further $1.22 billion in security aid.
Biden announced that his administration would fully utilize the funds appropriated by Congress. “At my direction, the United States will continue to work tirelessly throughout the remainder of my term in office to strengthen Ukraine’s position in this war,” he said. It’s about defending the freedom and independence of the Ukrainian people. Russia attacked its neighboring country in February 2022. The aid package aims to help Ukraine on the battlefield both immediately and in the long term, Biden said. The Ministry of Defense is already engaged in the delivery of projectiles, missiles and tanks that should strengthen Ukraine’s position this winter. According to the US State Department, these included ammunition for the US Himars artillery rocket launcher and Javelin anti-tank missiles.
The United States is Ukraine’s biggest supporter in its nearly three-year defensive battle. It is uncertain what course Biden’s successor Donald Trump will take, who will be sworn in as the 47th US President on January 20th.
