After the election in February, the polls see the FDP more outside than inside the Bundestag. But the party leader demonstrates composure. The party leadership is also encouraged by a financial aspect.
Despite weak poll numbers for the FDP, party leader Christian Lindner is optimistic about the federal election on February 23rd. “When I ran for the top candidate for the first time in 2012, we had 2 percent 60 days before the election. And after 60 days of the election campaign, we scored 8.6 percent,” Lindner told the German Press Agency in Berlin. “This shows what is possible. Now we have more time and are starting with better surveys.”
In the December opinion polls, the FDP was between 3 and 5 percent. In the 2021 federal election it achieved 11.5 percent. The deputy FDP chairman Wolfgang Kubicki again expects his party to achieve double-digit results in the election.
High willingness to donate makes the FDP leadership confident
The FDP leadership is also optimistic about the high number of donations in recent weeks. “With almost five million euros, we have never received so many small and large donations in such a short time. If the trend continues, a donation record is possible,” said the designated FDP General Secretary Marco Buschmann to the dpa. “This is also necessary so that we are visible in this tough and short election campaign on an equal footing with the major parties and their massive advertising budgets.”
Buschmann continued. “We currently don’t have power and prestige to offer, but only the power of an idea: the idea of political freedom. But for many, that is important enough to help ensure that this idea is strongly represented in the Bundestag.” From small individual donors to successful start-up founders to traditional medium-sized businesses, a lot of people invested in the FDP’s election campaign.
