For months, mediators have been trying to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of the hostages. Both sides are sometimes hopeful, sometimes pessimistic. Now there is a new attempt.
There is renewed hope in efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the return of Israeli hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved sending a negotiating delegation to Qatar on Friday, according to his office. The Gulf state, together with Egypt and the USA, is mediating between Israel and Hamas, which reject direct negotiations. Hamas also wanted to send negotiators.
A senior Hamas official expressed optimism. “The chances are good that the negotiations will be successful this time,” Mussa Abu Marsuk told the Qatari newspaper Al-Arabi Al-Jadid. He did not say what his optimism was based on. There have been many signs of hope, and each time they have been disappointed. Compromise is difficult because Israel and Hamas want to destroy each other.
Israel demands a list of names of the living hostages held in the Gaza Strip. According to media reports, Hamas said it needed a break in fighting to find out the whereabouts and health of the hostages. Israel considers this a false claim. Hamas is reportedly demanding that Israel commit to an end to the war, which Israel rejects.
The war was triggered by the unprecedented Hamas massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023, with 1,200 dead and around 250 abducted in Israel.
