Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Weil considers Germany’s strict austerity measures to be an aberration. More investment is a key to combating the economic downturn.
Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil is pushing for the debt brake to be relaxed after the federal election. “I believe that every federal government, regardless of its composition, will not be able to avoid dealing with the debt brake,” the SPD politician told the German Press Agency.
There is a comprehensive need for investment in infrastructure and politicians must create incentives for private investments. “This is a key to getting out of the economic downturn. It will cost a lot of money, but it is necessary,” said Weil. “That’s why we should reform the debt brake.”
If that doesn’t happen, everything will just become much more expensive. “Germany is the only industrialized country that is trying to achieve its goal through savings in this situation. But it is perhaps no wonder that we are the country with the lowest growth in the same group,” criticized the head of government.
While the SPD promised in the federal election campaign to make exceptions for investments in the debt brake in the future, the Union wants to stick to it.
