This is not the first time that a suspicious group of drones has been observed in the air in Scandinavia. What’s behind it? So far unclear.
Several mysterious drones have been spotted around a harbor south of Copenhagen. An eyewitness reported observing up to 20 larger drones around the recreational boat harbor in the small town of Køge late on Friday evening, Danish police said. A patrol then saw four of them, the last of them on Saturday night before they disappeared at high speed over the sea.
The police said they currently do not know where the drones came from, what they were doing in the area and who they belonged to. That’s what we’re trying to determine now. The Danish secret service PET, among others, was informed about the incident.
In the Nordic and Baltic states bordering the Baltic Sea, there is currently increased vigilance and alertness due to possible Russian acts of sabotage. NATO recently announced that it would increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea as a deterrent.
Increased vigilance in the Baltic Sea region
In Scandinavia, drones have repeatedly been spotted over power plants or airports in recent years, without the background to the meaning and purpose of the incidents becoming known – or whether state actors or private drone owners were behind them. Among other things, several such unmanned aircraft briefly paralyzed night-time air traffic at the Swedish Stockholm-Arlanda Airport – one of the most important airports in Scandinavia – in September.
The port city of Køge is located on the east coast of the Danish island of Zealand and there on the Køge Bay leading out towards the Baltic Sea. There have recently been several suspicious cable breaks in the Baltic Sea, and investigations into possible sabotage are currently underway. The suspect is an oil tanker that, according to the EU, belongs to the Russian shadow fleet, which Russia wants to use, among other things, to circumvent sanctions on oil transport.
