The investigation into the terror in New Orleans brings new details to light. The assassin is said to have scouted out the site of the attack before his crime – using an inconspicuous tool.
The New Orleans attacker visited the city at least twice before the New Year’s attack. Investigators announced at a press conference that he was there once in October and again in November.
During his at least two-day stay in October, he rode a bicycle through the French Quarter and recorded videos with smart glasses. Such glasses are inconspicuous because they look like normal glasses – but the wearer can take pictures hands-free. The assassin is said to have worn the glasses during the attack on Bourbon Street, but he did not activate them to take live recordings.
Investigators also reported that the attacker, who was a supporter of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist militia, had traveled to Egypt and Canada before the attack. However, it is not yet clear whether the trips were related to the crime.
14 people were killed when the attacker drove a pickup truck into a crowd in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The perpetrator died in an exchange of fire with police officers. On Monday, incumbent US President Joe Biden is expected in New Orleans, where, among other things, he wants to speak to relatives.
