It has been four years since an angry mob stormed the Capitol. The rioters wanted to prevent Biden from being confirmed as the election winner. Shortly before his end in office, he appealed to members of parliament.
According to US President Joe Biden, the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump on January 6, 2021 should not be forgotten or “rewritten”. “I don’t think we should pretend it didn’t happen,” Biden told reporters at the White House on Sunday. “I think what he did was a real threat to democracy.” He added: “But I’m confident that we’ve got this behind us.”
140 police officers injured in the storming of the Capitol in 2021
On Monday, both chambers of the US Congress will meet to formally confirm Republican Trump’s victory in the US presidential election on November 5th. Four years ago, on January 6, 2021, Trump, as head of state at the time, did not accept his election defeat against Biden. Supporters incited by him stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of Biden’s election victory. Offices were devastated, numerous members of parliament hid in fear of their lives from the thugs, and there were 140 injured police officers alone.
The events should “not be rewritten” and “not forgotten,” Biden continued. At the same time, he referred to his efforts to ensure a “smooth transition”. The US would have to return to a “normal transfer of power”.
In January 2021, then-Vice President Mike Pence resisted pressure from Trump and ultimately confirmed Democrat Biden’s victory. Trump was charged in connection with the events, but the proceedings were dropped because of his current election victory.
