Austria could be the next country to have a right-wing populist government. An overview of states where right-wingers govern or sit on the cabinet benches.
Will Herbert Kickl be the next right-wing populist head of government? Although his FPÖ has been a fixture in Austria for decades, it has not yet been enough for a chancellorship. But now it could come into play – because other parties could not agree on a coalition. At the end of September 2024, almost 30 percent of those eligible to vote voted for the right to be the strongest party in the Alpine republic.
Right-wing populists: one success after another
“A look at Austria shows what happens when you are no longer able to form an alliance,” said German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck about the negotiations in Vienna and warned of a development in which “the parties are moving further and further apart.”
Whether Kickl in Austria, Georgia Meloni in Italy, Donald Trump in the USA or Javier Milei in Argentina: right-wing forces are winning elections more and more often or are doing so well that it is almost impossible to govern without them. For example in Slovakia, where the left-wing populist Robert Fico and right-wing extremists are determining the country’s fate.
