It can also be done peacefully: The US Congress has officially confirmed the winner of the presidential election – Donald Trump.
The US Congress formally confirmed Republican Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election on Monday. His competitor for the post and current Vice President Kamala Harris declared the 78-year-old the winner of the presidential election on November 5th after the results from the individual states were read out on Monday.
The right-wing populist had clearly prevailed against Harris, who had accepted the candidacy of the Democratic Party a few months before the election.
Donald Trump is due to be sworn in in 14 days
Trump can take the oath of office as planned on January 20th and move into the White House for the second time, having been president from 2017 to the beginning of 2021. The Republican replaces the Democrat Joe Biden. Since his party also has majorities in both chambers of Congress, he can start his new term in office with extensive support from Parliament. He has announced a range of controversial projects, ranging from tax cuts and harsh measures against immigrants to a more protectionist economic course.
The storming of the Capitol: These images shocked the world
Thousands of Donald Trump supporters gather in front of the Capitol on January 6, 2021. The elected US president had previously called on them in a speech to march to the headquarters of Congress and fight “like the devil”.

What is usually a formality after the election was interrupted four years ago by an excess of violence by angry Trump supporters who viewed the then defeated Republican as the winner.
Trump still does not recognize his defeat in the 2020 election against Democrat Joe Biden. He incited his supporters on January 6, 2021 with stories of massive election fraud. Many Republicans also stick with the stolen victory narrative, despite there being no evidence to back it up.
