Civil war country: USA relaxes sanctions conditions for Syria

The USA is sticking with the far-reaching sanctions against Syria for the time being. Humanitarian aid should now be made easier – temporarily.

The US is temporarily easing sanctions conditions to facilitate humanitarian aid in Syria. However, the far-reaching sanctions against the country themselves remain in place. The measure will apply for six months, said the US Treasury Department in Washington. Aid organizations and companies that supply essential goods are granted an exemption. As long as it is unclear in which direction the new leadership is moving, the White House is sticking with the sanctions for the time being. Syria’s new government emerges from the Islamist rebel group HTS, which the United States classifies as a terrorist organization.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated US support for a peaceful political transition in Syria in a conversation with his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud, a US State Department spokesman said. The rights and fundamental freedoms of all Syrians, including members of minorities, must be respected. At the same time, Blinken emphasized the need for the international community to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid in Syria.
