Arrest warrant extended against suspended President Yoon

After several failed arrest attempts, an arrest warrant for Yoon Suk Yeol had expired. Now the South Korean anti-corruption agency is making a second attempt.

A court in the South Korean capital Seoul has extended the arrest warrant against suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol at the request of the Anti-Corruption Agency (CIO). The official Yonhap news agency reported this, citing local officials. With the extension, the CIO will probably try again soon to execute the arrest warrant against Yoon, Yonhap wrote.

The original arrest warrant against Yoon expired on Monday midnight (local time) after CIO officials failed to arrest the suspended president.

Most recently, on Friday, dozens of investigators tried for more than five hours to arrest Yoon in order to question him in the case surrounding the brief declaration of martial law in early December. However, around 200 members of the army and security services stood in their way on the grounds of the presidential residence. The arrest attempt was ultimately aborted for security reasons.

Yoon is accused of abuse of power and sedition

Yoon remains in his high-walled residence, which is guarded by dozens of presidential security personnel. Hundreds of supporters of the suspended president are also camping in front of the entrance to the property.

The background to the arrest warrant is an investigation against Yoon after he briefly declared martial law on December 3rd in a budget dispute with the opposition. Parliament later voted to remove him from office. The Constitutional Court is currently reviewing this decision. The current Finance Minister and Vice Prime Minister Choi Sang Mok is temporarily in charge of state affairs.

The allegations against Yoon are abuse of power and sedition. Before the attempted arrest, he had ignored three summonses from the anti-corruption agency. She finally applied to a court for an arrest warrant.
