According to people in Germany, US entrepreneur Elon Musk’s election recommendation for the AfD helped the party. This was stated by 59 percent of those surveyed in a representative survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency. Only 4 percent were of the opinion that it had harmed the AfD, 24 percent saw no effect. 13 percent answered “don’t know.”

Nevertheless, a majority of those surveyed do not believe that Musk’s statements on his Platform X will have a major influence on the federal election campaign. 50 percent see a rather small or very small influence, 13 percent even see no influence at all. On the other hand, 27 percent consider the influence of the advisor to US President-elect Donald Trump to be rather large or very large.

Musk initially called on X and later in a guest article in “Welt am Sonntag” to vote for the AfD in the federal election. On Thursday he wants to hold a live talk on his platform with AfD leader Alice Weidel.

The majority doubts Musk’s assessments of Germany

When asked whether the US billionaire could assess the political situation in Germany, 68 percent of those surveyed answered “no”, while 21 percent believed him to be able to do so.

Many of those surveyed want to regulate social media to prevent interference from abroad. 63 percent of survey participants would at least partially support such a step. However, a majority of AfD supporters (58 percent) would reject this.

For the survey, YouGov surveyed 2,246 people aged 18 and over from January 3rd to 6th.
