The US President-elect once again expresses his interest in controlling the important waterway – and does not rule out the possibility of the US military being deployed. Panama reacts clearly.
Panama’s government has rejected US President-elect Donald Trump’s claims to the Panama Canal. “The sovereignty of our canal is non-negotiable,” Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha said at a press conference. The canal’s task is to serve humanity and world trade. “The only hands that control the canal are Panamanian and will remain that way.”
Trump had previously not ruled out using the military to gain control of the canal at a press conference. He had previously described the transit fees as “highly unfair”. He called for control of the waterway to be returned to the United States if it was not treated fairly.
The Panama Canal – one of the world’s most important trade routes – was built by the United States in the early 20th century and controlled for a long time before management gradually passed to Panama. The fees charged by the Central American country are considered to be in line with the market as they are based on the size and tonnage of the ships passing through.
