According to the government, the Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was arrested in Iran almost three weeks ago, has been released in Rome and is on her way to Italy.
The Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was imprisoned in Iran, is free again. The 29-year-old has been released from prison and is already on her way to Italy by plane, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office said on Wednesday.
Sala was arrested in Tehran in December, although she is said to have had a valid journalist visa. According to Iranian sources, the reporter was detained for “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic.” No details were given.
Iran has already arrested foreigners several times
Sala’s arrest came just three days after Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa airport. Abedini was taken into custody on a US warrant. He is accused of supplying drone parts. According to US information, these were used in an attack in Jordan in 2023 in which three American soldiers were killed. Iran has denied involvement in the attack and criticized Abedini’s arrest as a violation of international law.
In the past, Iranian security forces have arrested foreigners or dual nationals on several occasions, mostly on charges of espionage. Human rights organizations accuse Tehran of using such detentions as political leverage. Iran denies these accusations.
