Zelenskyj announces trip to Ramstein for talks
Kiev looks forward to the coming change of power in Washington with trepidation. At a meeting in Ramstein, he will personally push for further arms deliveries for the fight against Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his visit to the US base Ramstein in Germany on Thursday for talks about further arms deliveries. “The key task for Ukraine is to strengthen our air defense, to at least enable Ukraine to keep the Russian air force away from our cities and borders,” said the head of state in his daily video message. In addition to talks in the so-called Ramstein format, bilateral talks at defense minister level are also planned.
US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had previously announced his trip to Ramstein on Platform X. According to media reports, the announcement of a final new package of US military aid before the change of power in Washington on January 20th is also expected. According to Zelensky, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umjerow is already in Germany and is holding talks. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU Foreign Affairs Representative Kaja Kallas are also expected.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion with Western help for almost three years. The so-called Ramstein meetings have been taking place regularly since 2022 and are organized by the USA.
