A Swiss citizen has died in custody in Iran. The exact circumstances are unclear. According to state media, he took his own life.
A prisoner with Swiss citizenship died in prison in Iran. The Foreign Ministry in Bern confirmed this news from Iranian state media. Iranian radio reported that the person committed suicide in a detention center in Semnan province on Thursday morning. She was imprisoned on espionage charges.
“The Swiss embassy in Tehran is in contact with the local authorities to clarify the circumstances of the death in an Iranian prison,” said the Foreign Ministry (EDA) in Bern. “At this point, the EDA cannot provide any further information.” Iranian state radio did not provide any information about the person’s identity or gender.
Several European and German nationals, some of them with Iranian passports, are imprisoned in Iran. Critics accuse Tehran of holding foreign citizens as political hostages.
