During Donald Trump Jr.’s visit to Greenland, several locals showed up with US flags. But their enthusiasm for Greenland under US rule is said not to have been genuine.
During their visit to Greenland, Donald Trump Jr. and his entourage reportedly recruited people to portray them in videos as Trump supporters with the promise of a free lunch at a posh hotel. This was reported by the Danish radio broadcaster DR. Several sources told the broadcaster that the videos surrounding the short trip of the son of US President-elect Donald Trump showed, among other things, several homeless people and other socially disadvantaged people, often in front of a supermarket stay at the hotel.
“These are homeless people and old people who can suddenly eat in a restaurant they’ve never been to before,” a long-time resident of the capital Nuuk was quoted as saying by the broadcaster. To be there, all they had to do was put on “Make America Great Again” hats and participate in the Trump staff videos. “They are being bribed and it is in extremely poor taste,” he said.
Videos from the newspaper “Ekstra Bladet” also showed how people on the street were approached by Trump employees and given “Maga” hats. It shows, among other things, an older woman wearing such a cap who didn’t even know the name of the person she was supposed to eat with – Trump Jr. She just went along, she said.
Trump supporter rejects allegations
An avowed Trump supporter who showed Trump Jr. the Greenland capital of Nuuk denied to DR that the people had been “recruited” in front of the supermarket. Rather, they themselves stood in front of the hotel and showed interest.

Regardless, Trump continues to exploit his son’s trip in the media. In a post on his social network Truth Social, the 78-year-old thanked Greenlanders for treating his son and other representatives “so nicely.” He also posted a video in which Greenlanders wearing “Maga” hats praised him, supported the purchase of Greenland by the USA or agreed to the question of whether they wanted to be part of America.
Donald Trump greets “fans” in Greenland
“We will see you again – soon!” wrote Trump. It is unclear whether he is actually planning a trip to the island, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Donald Jr.’s trip to Greenland received a lot of attention because his father Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed desire for Greenland, which is part of the Danish Kingdom, in the past. At a press conference on Tuesday – the day of his son’s visit to Greenland – Trump Sr. did not rule out using military or economic coercion to gain control of the world’s largest island. Several European NATO states reacted to these statements with criticism and incomprehension.
Denmark takes Trump statements seriously
In Denmark, Trump’s statements are taken very seriously. The government of Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen informed the leaders of the parliamentary parties about the matter on Thursday evening. Afterwards, Frederiksen told reporters that a conversation with Trump had been suggested, but that she expected it would only happen after the Republican was sworn into office on January 20.
