The impeachment trial against suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol begins on Tuesday. But he doesn’t want to appear at the mandatory appointment.
South Korea’s suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol is unlikely to appear at the first hearing in his impeachment trial. Yoon’s lawyer based the decision on concerns for his client’s safety, South Korea’s official Yonhap News Agency reported.
Yoon Suk Yeol remains in his residence, which is protected by high walls and barbed wire fences and guarded by dozens of presidential security personnel. Hundreds of supporters of the suspended president are also camping in front of the entrance to the property. So far, Yoon has successfully defended himself against several arrest attempts by the Anti-Corruption Authority (CIO). In addition to the current impeachment proceedings, this is investigating the suspended president for abuse of power and sedition.
On December 3, Yoon briefly declared martial law amid a budget dispute with the opposition. Parliament later voted to remove him from office. The Constitutional Court is currently reviewing this decision. The first day of hearings in the trial begins on Tuesday.
