A plan to attack Israel’s embassy – all the alarm signals are ringing. However, after almost three months in custody, a suspect has now been released.
A Libyan imprisoned on suspicion of terrorism has been released. He was taken into custody in October because there were indications that he wanted to attack the Israeli embassy in Berlin with firearms.
However, upon request, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced that the urgent suspicion could not be maintained. Therefore, at the end of last week, she ordered her release and applied for the arrest warrant to be revoked. “Spiegel” had previously reported on it.
The case fueled the political discussion about protection against terror in October, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) also commented on it.
Chats with an IS member
The suspect at the time – according to dpa information, a rejected asylum seeker – was arrested in Bernau near Berlin. To plan the project, he exchanged information with an IS member in a messenger chat, the federal prosecutor’s office said at the time. His apartment and another apartment of a person who was not a suspect in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia were then searched. The tip about the Libyan is said to have come from a foreign intelligence service.
Even back then, it wasn’t entirely clear how concrete the Libyan’s plans actually were. In this case, as in several similar cases in the recent past, the security authorities quickly acted upon the tip-off.
