Survey: Germans expect more climate protection from the government

Many Germans would like the next federal government to be more committed to climate protection. According to a survey, one topic is considered particularly important.

According to a survey, a majority of Germans expect the next federal government to do more to protect the climate. 53 percent of those surveyed said this in the study commissioned by the Climate Alliance Germany. 20 percent do not think that the government should be more committed to climate protection. According to the numbers, 24 percent are undecided.

The participants were also asked about their voting decision in the recent federal election. Those who voted for the Greens in 2021 rated climate protection as particularly important in the survey: 86 percent of the Green voters surveyed said that the next government would have to do more in this regard. However, 47 percent of the AfD voters surveyed replied that the issue should not be a priority for the coming government.

Respondents find disaster relief particularly important

In the representative survey, participants were also asked to rate their attitudes towards various investments. The statement that received the greatest approval was that the state should invest more money in disaster relief. 75 percent were in favor, and approval ratings were high across party lines. 74 percent rated public investments in infrastructure, education, climate and social issues as important.

Almost six weeks before the federal election, the Climate Alliance linked the results of the survey with a call for the parties to present ambitious concepts for climate protection in Germany. “We want to allay the fear of the candidate parties that they will lose support if they deal with climate protection,” said Eva-Maria Welskop-Deffaa, President of the German Caritas Association. Promises of progress in the election campaign can only be kept if politicians also invest in climate protection.

The Climate Alliance is an alliance of more than 150 organizations. The online survey was conducted in mid-December among 3,040 participants.
