From half-mast to full height – and back again: In Washington, mourning for a deceased president and the celebrations for the inauguration of a newly elected official collide.
For Donald Trump’s inauguration, the US flags at the Capitol will temporarily be raised to full height next Monday. However, they should be blowing at half mast again on Tuesday, as the Republican chairman of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, announced on Platform X. The background is the ongoing 30-day mourning period for former President Jimmy Carter. The Democrat, who served from 1977 to 1981, died on December 29th at the age of 100.
Shortly after Carter’s death, Trump expressed anger at the prospect of flags remaining at half-mast during his inauguration. “Democrats are thrilled that our magnificent American flag may fly at half-mast during my inauguration,” he wrote on Truth Social. “They think it’s so great because in reality they don’t love our country, they only think about themselves.”
Despite his criticism, Trump paid tribute to the late Carter, visiting his coffin in state at the Capitol last week and taking part in the state funeral service.
