After a drone attack on fuel depots in Russian regions, Moscow responded with a massive missile attack on Ukraine. Once again it is massively aimed at energy supply.

Russia launched a massive missile attack on Ukraine. Ukrainian media report that an air alarm was triggered across the country in the morning. “It is the middle of winter, and the goal for the Russians remains unchanged: our energy supply,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj wrote on Telegram. He said it was a combined attack in which 40 rockets and 70 drones were used. He again called for strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses to resist such attacks.

“There are impacts on two critical infrastructure objects in Drohobych and Stryi districts,” the military governor of the western Ukrainian Lviv region, Maxym Kosytskyi, said on Telegram. According to him, the region was attacked with cruise missiles. There were no deaths or injuries. Emergency power shutdowns were also not necessary in Lviv.

In neighboring Ivano-Frankivsk, energy supply facilities were also attacked. The emergency services are in action and the situation is under control, assured Governor Svitlana Onyshchuk.

In other regions, however, there were blackouts. Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko justified this with preventive measures because of the rocket attack. The Kharkiv, Sumy, Poltava, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad regions were affected. However, nothing is known yet about damage in the regions.

According to the Ukrainian anti-aircraft defense system, the Russian military used cruise missiles, but also hypersonic Kinzhal missiles and other ballistic missiles in the attack. Russian fighter jets also dropped glide bombs over regions near the border such as Sumy.

Russia is deliberately and systematically bombarding energy facilities in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, around half of Ukraine’s energy capacity has been destroyed.
