400 million Hindu pilgrims from all over the world are expected at the Maha Kumbh Mela – more than ever before. Impressions of a festival also for the senses.
It is the largest religious event in the world: the Maha Kumbh Mela. Every twelve years, devout Hindus make a pilgrimage to the banks of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in the northern Indian city of Prayagraj. This year, authorities expect a total of up to 400 million people to visit the site in the state of Uttar Pradesh over the next six weeks.
The event not only has an important religious meaning in Hinduism – one cleanses oneself from sins – but has also become an important political event in recent years. Hindu nationalism is on the rise in India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing party is also responsible for this. Preventing mass panics or disease outbreaks is a huge logistical challenge for India’s government.
