Millions of Ukrainians became internally displaced or had to flee abroad after the Russian invasion. Hope should remain intact even after three years of war.
The United Nations has called on the international community to provide the equivalent of around 3.2 billion euros in aid for Ukrainian refugees. “We should not forget the people. They are suffering,” United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi said at a news conference in Kiev. The aim is to continue to give Ukrainian refugees hope even after almost three years of war.
Grandi had previously visited regions close to the front and areas on the Russian border and held talks with Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal.
A UN plan presented for 2025 provides aid for six million people in Ukraine. This includes food, medical care, shelter, cash and other measures. This particularly applies to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and people with disabilities. In addition, more than two million refugees in eleven host countries should have access to housing, decent work and health care.
Millions of people received help
In 2024, the United Nations Refugee Agency provided food to three million people in Ukraine. Around 5.8 million were helped with the supply of water, sanitation facilities and hygiene products, especially in areas close to the front. An additional two million people received access to medical services, and approximately one million refugees received housing, education and cash assistance.
Almost three years ago, the Russian army invaded Ukraine. According to UN statistics, 6.8 million Ukrainian refugees are registered outside the country.
