The Washington Post staff is dissatisfied and demands a meeting with Amazon founder and owner Jeff Bezos. His personnel decisions in particular have led to great dissatisfaction.
More than 400 Washington Post employees have written a letter to owner Jeff Bezos calling for a joint meeting to discuss the newspaper’s management. It states that recent management decisions have “deeply disturbed” the staff and also caused readers to doubt the integrity of the US newspaper, as CNN and the “New York Times” unanimously reported, citing the letter.
Although the letter does not explicitly mention the name of the editor, William Lewis, it is interpreted as a criticism of him. Lewis took over the post about a year ago and initiated sweeping changes. In the letter, employees should also point out that some of the decisions were responsible for respected colleagues deciding to leave the newspaper. At the beginning of the year, US cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize winner Ann Telnaes left the Washington Post in a dispute over one of her drawings. Further departures are therefore likely to occur.
The Washington Post has been owned by multi-billionaire Amazon founder Bezos since 2013. Before the US election in November, he decided against an election recommendation that had already been written for Donald Trump’s opponent Kamala Harris, thereby triggering criticism within the editorial team and among readers.
