Alleged attack plans: Police are investigating 17-year-olds from Cologne

The police are investigating a 17-year-old from Cologne. He is suspected of having planned an Islamist-motivated attack. The young man is in custody. If the suspicion is confirmed, he faces five years in prison.

The Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office has launched investigations into suspected Islamist attack plans against a 17-year-old arrested at Hanover’s main train station. It is being investigated on suspicion of preparing a serious act of violence that is dangerous to the state, as the public prosecutor announced on Monday. The accused arrested on Saturday had “been instructed by others in the skills needed to commit an Islamist-motivated attack,” it said.

The 17-year-old comes from the greater Cologne area. No further information was initially given because of his age and to protect the investigation. The investigations are being carried out by the North Rhine-Westphalia Central Office for the Prosecution of Terrorism, which is based at the Düsseldorf Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Police found no other suspicious items

According to information from the personal environment of the suspect, the state security of the police in Cologne took over investigations into a possible dangerous situation in Hanover on Saturday. According to the Attorney General, the federal police met the 17-year-old at Hanover Central Station on Saturday and took him to the police station.

In the course of initial investigations, there were indications of a dangerous situation because of a suspicious object in an ICE that was in Wunstorf near Hanover. According to the information, nothing was found during the search with explosives detection dogs. There were no dangerous objects in the 17-year-old’s bag either.

The accused remains in custody. In the event of a conviction for preparing a serious act of violence that is dangerous to the state, the law provides for a maximum sentence of five years in prison for juveniles.
