Mark Carney previously headed the central banks in Canada and the United Kingdom. Now he wants to become Canada’s new head of government. He could succeed – but possibly only for a few weeks.

The former head of the British and Canadian central banks, Mark Carney, has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party and thus for the office of prime minister. “I’m doing this because Canada is the best country in the world,” Carney told supporters in Edmonton on Thursday (local time). “But it could be even better.”

The 59-year-old would replace current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation at the beginning of January after more than nine years in office.

Carney was Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He was previously head of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013. “I’m not the usual suspect when it comes to politics, but this is not the time for usual politics,” he said in Edmonton. It is not the time for professional politicians like the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre. According to Canadian media, the Conservatives are currently leading in surveys.

According to media reports, the Liberals will decide on the new leadership of their party on March 9th. Carney could then also take over as Prime Minister – but only for a few weeks, until Parliament meets again on March 24th. The opposition could then force an early election with a vote of no confidence.
