Ukraine aid, yes, but how? There is an ongoing dispute about this in Berlin, in which Chancellor Scholz takes a controversial position. The conflict has consequences, warns the Foreign Minister.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock regrets the ongoing dispute over new billions in aid for Ukraine – and warns of the consequences. “The Federal Republic as a whole is currently not seen as a driver of peace policy in Europe,” said the Green politician on the “Berlin Playbook” podcast of the news magazine “Politico”.
Although there is a majority in the Bundestag for a further three billion euros in military aid for Ukraine, there is no agreement on the financing. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his SPD want to take out new loans and abolish the debt brake. The Union, FDP and Greens reject this.
The federal government is currently still in an internal debate. “But of course it left its mark on our European neighbors,” said Baerbock. With the Federal Chancellor’s clear stance at the turn of the century, it was possible to regain the trust of other European states. The Foreign Minister warned: “This must not be damaged again by causing quarrels and hesitation.”
Baerbock: Don’t hang your flags in the wind during the election campaign
It hurts them that in the election campaign, for some people, winning votes for the federal election is more important than Europe’s responsibility for peace. “For me, responsible politics means not hanging the flag to the wind and perhaps hanging it the other way around in election campaigns,” said Baerbock.
She emphasized: “As long as Putin is not prepared to silence his weapons and withdraw his troops, in addition to the offers of talks, support for Ukraine will be further expanded – and I say further expanded.”
