Only three days remain until Donald Trump is sworn in as US President. Then what is he doing about Ukraine? Chancellor Scholz is pretty sure about one point.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) does not expect future US President Donald Trump to stop military support for Ukraine. After a meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, he was confident “that good cooperation between Europe and the USA will continue to be successful on the issue of supporting Ukraine in the future,” he said. “So I don’t expect that there will be a cessation of US support for Ukraine in its defense.”
During the election campaign, Trump said several times that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours – but without giving any specific details. There is speculation that he could sharply cut or withdraw support to Ukraine to force a peace solution. However, there is no concrete evidence of this.
The USA is by far Ukraine’s most important arms supplier. Germany follows behind. A cessation of US aid would also have a significant impact on the discussion about German aid.
