Mark Carney previously headed the central banks in Canada and the United Kingdom. Now he wants to become Canada’s new head of government. Former Deputy Prime Minister Freeland is also applying.
The race to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Canada is open: Former head of the British and Canadian central banks, Mark Carney, and former deputy prime minister, Chrystia Freeland, announced their candidacies for the leadership of the Liberal Party and the office of the Prime Minister. Trudeau announced his resignation at the beginning of January after more than nine years in office.
“I’m doing this because Canada is the best country in the world,” Carney, 59, told supporters in Edmonton. “But it could be even better.” The 56-year-old Freeland announced her candidacy on the online platform X: “I’m running to fight for Canada.”
Ex-bank boss against ex-deputy prime minister
Carney was Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. He was previously head of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013. “I’m not the usual suspect when it comes to politics, but this is not the time for usual politics,” he said in Edmonton. It is not the time for professional politicians like the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre. According to Canadian media, the Conservatives are currently leading in surveys.
Freeland worked as a journalist before entering politics, and then served, among other things, as trade, foreign and finance ministers and deputy prime minister under Trudeau. In December she announced her resignation following disagreements with the Prime Minister.
According to media reports, the Liberals will decide on the new leadership of their party on March 9th. Then the winner could also take over the post of Prime Minister – but only for a few weeks, until Parliament meets again on March 24th. The opposition could then force an early election with a vote of no confidence.
