Money for the military
Pistorius: Two percent for military spending is not enough

The debate about more money for security and the military is ongoing. It’s always about billions of euros. It is clear to the Defense Minister that there needs to be a significant increase.
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) believes defense spending of two percent of gross domestic product is definitely not sufficient – and possibly three percent or more is necessary. The fact that two percent is certainly not enough is now a common position among many in Europe, said Pistorius during a visit to the shipyard of the submarine builder Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) in Wismar.
It is clear that more must be spent on defense. However, one should pay less attention to the percentage figures because they would be over two percent anyway.
In NATO it is more about which country provides how many brigades or how many units under and above water. “Aircraft, land forces, cyber technologies – these are all questions that are now being sorted,” said Pistorius. NATO’s corresponding demands on member states would then have to be met within a certain period of time in order to achieve full deterrence capability.
“That should be the benchmark by which we all orient ourselves. And if it costs three percent, then it costs three percent or more. The goal is the focus.”
