It was worth it: Hundreds of thousands of copies of Angela Merkel’s book “Freedom” have already been sold. And it still sells extremely well.
The publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch reports great success with Angela Merkel’s book “Freedom”. “We’re still selling now
around 12,000 copies per week, which is sensational.” In “Freiheit. “Memories 1954 – 2021”, the 70-year-old ex-Chancellor looks back on her life on 736 pages. The hardback edition costs 42 euros.
“It was very important to us and the authors to reach a young audience,” says Gleba. “The interview that presenter Hazel Brugger conducted with Ms. Merkel has 1.5 million views on YouTube.” Many users also shared excerpts from it on social media. This is how the young audience became aware of the book. Around a third of the readership is under 40. Many young people also came to book signings.
“I think the book can also give something to people who are not very familiar with politics, through the special life story of Angela Merkel. It shows: It’s not ‘those up there’ who make politics, but people who “We are helping to shape our society with all of their strengths and weaknesses,” said the publisher.
“In Germany we sold 600,000 copies by Christmas. That’s really phenomenal,” emphasized Gleba. Internationally, the successes were also “gigantic”. 25,000 copies were sold in the USA in the first few weeks and 40,000 in England. “In the Netherlands the book was number one on the bestseller list with 25,000 copies sold.” According to her, it was also on the bestseller lists in Italy and all Scandinavian countries.
