Debit capital gains? Merz attacks Habeck

“Crazy idea” and “nonsense”: Union Chancellor candidate Merz harshly rejects the Greens’ proposal for social security contributions on capital gains.
The Green Party’s proposal to raise social security contributions on capital gains is clearly rejected by Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz. “How can you come up with such a crazy idea?” said the CDU leader during an election campaign appearance in Langenhagen near Hanover. “If you want to discourage savers and destroy the capital market, then you have to talk such nonsense.”
The proposal is proof that Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck has no idea about economic connections, said Merz. “This economic policy of this Federal Minister of Economics will end with our victory in the 2025 federal election.”
Green Chancellor candidate Habeck had suggested using income from capital gains such as interest or share profits in addition to wages to finance health and social insurance. This would allow the health system to be financed more efficiently and in a more solidarity-based manner – the goal is to “relieve the burden for the many”. The Greens held out the prospect of generous allowances for this, but have not yet given a specific number.
