What does US President-elect Donald Trump plan to do with Tiktok? There is now a three-month extension for the video app, which is threatened with closure in the USA.
The future US President Donald Trump is promising Tiktok a delay of three months before the impending end in the USA. That is the most likely course of action, Trump told the TV station NBC. “If I decide to do this, I will announce it on Monday.” According to its own information, the video app has more than 170 million users in the USA. Trump will be sworn in as the next US president on Monday.
The China-based Tiktok owner was given 270 days to divest from the video app under a US law on foreign control of online platforms. This deadline expires on Sunday. Then, according to the law, Tiktok must be removed from the American app stores of Apple and Google and lose access to technical infrastructure. The law stipulates high penalties of $5,000 per user for US service providers who continue to provide Tiktok after the deadline has expired.
Joe Biden wants to leave implementation to Donald Trump
The government of outgoing US President Joe Biden announced that enforcement of the law would be left to Trump. This should also mean that violations of the law by US companies would not be punished. On Friday, Tiktok demanded direct assurances from the government at least to the most important tech service providers and announced that otherwise the platform in the USA would be shut down on Sunday.
White House spokeswoman Karina Jean-Pierre sees the announcement as a demonstrative action: “We see no reason to act for Tiktok or other companies before the Trump administration takes over on Monday,” she was quoted as saying by the BBC.
Bytedance and Tiktok don’t want to talk about sales
Meanwhile, the legal basis for a three-month delay by Trump is unclear. According to the law, the US President can grant an extension of 90 days. However, the prerequisite for this is that there are promising sales negotiations. Bytedance and Tiktok have so far categorically refused to talk about a separation.
There are warnings in the US that the Chinese government could gain access to Tiktok data from Americans and use the platform to influence public opinion. This led to the law being passed with a large majority. The companies reject the allegations.
