Donald Trump started his second term in office with numerous decrees. Many are aiming to close the border with Mexico. More military should also help with this.
In order to strengthen the USA’s isolation, 1,500 additional soldiers are to be sent to the Mexican border by the end of the month. Trump signed a corresponding decree, said White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, according to the press present. “This is something that President Trump campaigned on, and the American people have been waiting for a time like this – for our Department of Defense to actually take homeland security seriously.”
Several US media had previously reported on this – although the number of additional US soldiers varied. Soldiers are already deployed in the southern United States to support border guards, for example for logistical tasks. However, when Trump took office on Monday, he declared a national emergency at the southern border and gave the Defense Department the authority to send additional troops in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security.
Donald Trump generally equates migrants with criminals
According to Trump’s account, the border is overrun by members of foreign cartels, criminal gangs, terrorists and human traffickers. The Republican repeatedly equates migrants, many of whom cross the border illegally, with criminals. Many of them are already feeling the impact of Trump’s initial decisions aimed at curbing immigration.
According to CNN, around 2,200 soldiers are already deployed on the southern border. The border protection authorities in Texas have long been supported by members of the National Guard, according to the Texas military authority.
