New US government: Trump wants to change the state apparatus and bring them in line

US President Donald Trump drives plans in the first few days of his new term in order to roll up the state apparatus and bring it to his line. Trump signed various arrangements directly at the start. Among them is a decree, according to which federal employees in large numbers in future classify as “political” employees – and can therefore be fired more easily. Trump wants to expand his options, to fill in the state apparatus with persons who represent his politics loyally, and he already makes use of it to get rid of unpleasant federal employees. In contrast, there is legal resistance.

The system is turned upside down

So far, the employees in ministries and authorities have been neutral and impartial officials in the large majority, whose jobs are particularly protected, explains the legal professor at the Georgetown University in Washington, Dave Rapallo. So far, only a small number of high -ranking posts has been “politically” occupied – with people who are bound to the respective president and his political agenda. However, Trump intends to “turn this upside down so that the majority of employees fall into this political category,” says Rapallo. You could then be released easier.

How many federal employees could be affected is still unclear. It could be tens of thousands. In the arrangement that Trump signed, there were numerous and well -documented cases in recent years, “in which federal employees opposed politics and the instructions of their managers and undertook them”. It is therefore necessary to restore the “accountability obligation” in the public service.

Trump had already made such an advance at the end of his first term – but it was no longer used properly and was quickly stopped by his successor, the Democrat Joe Biden. This time Trump is therefore starting the change right at the beginning of his term.

Unpleasant employees have to go

The “Washington Post” and other US media reported that Trump’s team had quickly cold about 160 employees of the National Security Council shortly after taking office. Before you could continue to work, you should be checked individually to ensure that everyone is committed to the implementation of Trump’s “America First” agenda. According to media reports, Trump’s advisor had asked for high -ranking career diplomats in the outdoor department before the president of the President.

It is normal and common that ranking employees in ministries and authorities are exchanged in a political change of power. However, Trump is not limited to high -ranking items, but is much more important – precisely due to the new classification of federal employees. Trump’s government also left the diversity officers with the federal authorities and plans to abolish their positions in the next step. So far, their work should ensure that people of different origins, different sexes or disabilities get the same opportunities in the workplace. Such initiatives have been with violent criticism from Trump’s Republican Party for years.

The new president has also ordered that the federal government should return to the office. And he has a far -reaching “stop” for the federal government – with the exception of the military and other central institutions. Trump said it was about “ensuring that we only hire competent people who are loyal to the American public”.

“Threats for the democratic system”

“Although he has control over the executive, he clearly plans an even greater control over the entire federal government,” says Rapallo, who has worked for the Democrats in Parliament and the government in the past. Trump took up his second term at different levels with new political strength: Among other things, the Republicans have the say in both parliamentary chambers and are entirely on Trump’s line, and in the judiciary Trump also has a supreme court in his back, which is far after his sacrifications moved on the right and is good for him.

If the three state forces are like this, their mutual control is the weakest, Rapallo warns. “This is still worsened by the fact that so many people in these branches do not have their institutional interests in mind, but rather put their party in the first place,” he complains. “I am very concerned about the threats for our democratic system.”
