Kremlin boss Putin is forcing himself to meet with US President Trump. Kyiv does not want to be left out.
The Ukrainian leadership has criticized an offer from Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with US President Donald Trump soon. The Kremlin chief is trying to promote the idea of negotiations with the USA, wrote Ukrainian presidential advisor Andriy Yermak on Telegram. “But he has one condition – he wants to negotiate the fate of Europe – without Europe. And he wants to talk about Ukraine – without Ukraine.”
It can’t work like that in a modern world, President Volodymyr Zelensky’s head of the presidential administration continued. “Putin must return to reality himself or he will be brought back.”
Putin, who is largely isolated in the West, practically forced himself into an early meeting with Trump in an interview on state radio. “It is indeed better if we meet based on today’s realities to calmly talk about all the areas of interest to both the United States and Russia,” he said. “We are ready for this.”
Trump also wants to meet Putin
Trump announced just a few hours after his inauguration on Monday that he wanted to talk to Putin as quickly as possible. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, he recently repeated his offer: “I would really like to meet with President Putin soon to end this war.”
Putin was rather cautious about including Ukraine in any talks that could lead to an end to the hostilities. Kiev “will have to lift the ban on talks with Russia under pressure from the West, which supplies Ukraine,” Putin said.
