According to the knife attack: Scholz wants to submit government declaration
Union Chancellor Merz wants to have a sharper migration policy in the Bundestag before the election. Chancellor Scholz goes on the offensive.
The knife attack of Aschaffenburg has triggered a violent debate about migration policy – next week it will be held in the Bundestag. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) plans to submit a government declaration on “current domestic topics” on Wednesday. He submitted a corresponding application to the parliament on Friday, as the German press agency learned from government circles. It can be assumed that it will be about the consequences of the fatal knife attack of Aschaffenburg.
Union faction leader Friedrich Merz has announced that they want to bring applications for migration policy to the Bundestag next week. “And we will bring them in, regardless of who agrees,” said the CDU leader and candidate for Chancellor of the Union. A majority for the Union applications beyond the approval of the SPD and the Greens could exist together with the FDP, AfD and BSW – together they would have 372 votes. The majority is 367.
The SPD has warned the Union against tearing the fire wall to the AfD. AfD and BSW have generally signaled consent to Union plans for a sharper migration policy. For the FDP, faction leader Christian Dürr told the Editorial Network Germany (RND): “If the Union drives a determined migration policy in the Bundestag, we will take a closer look at and support it if it goes in the right direction.” The FDP will also make its own suggestions.
Scholz doubts Merz ‘”Brandwall” promise
In the event of his choice as a chancellor, Merz had promised significantly more deportations and at all borders a “factual ban on entry” for many migrants. He made it clear that this was conditions for possible coalition partners and formulated: “It is completely indifferent to me who goes politically.”
Scholz warned Merz against wanting to enforce Bundestag applications for a sharper migration policy with the help of the AfD. “So far I had the impression that the opposition leader’s statement could not be used to work with the AfD even after the election,” said Scholz of the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”, the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten” and the newspapers of the new Berlin editorial company. “Now I’m really worried after the CDU now wants to enforce its applications in the Bundestag with votes from the AfD.” The Chancellor demanded: “The fire wall for the AfD must not crumble.”
Weidel: Fell. Chrupalla: Not yet.
The AfD leadership reacted differently. Chancellor candidate Alice Weidel wrote at X: “The fire wall fell! CDU and CSU accepted my offer to vote with the AfD in the migration of the migration in the Bundestag.”
Co-party leader Tino Chrupalla, on the other hand, said “T-Online”: “The fire wall does not yet fall when the CDU and CSU copy our applications in recent years and advertise our consent.” It only falls when the other political groups in the Bundestag also agreed. However, the Union had not promoted AfD approval.
Wagenknecht: Of course, sensible applications are true
BSW boss Sahra Wagenknecht told the editorial network Germany: “If the Union brings meaningful applications to the German Bundestag in order to end uncontrolled migration and to attribute those obliged to leave to their home countries, then of course we agree.”
Template for vote still unclear
Since the Union wants to bring in one or more new applications – among other things, to be recovering measures by the Federal Police -, however, should not be finalized on the proposals coming up in the coming session, but will only be advised in the first reading. It is questionable whether there will be a vote before the election.
In Aschaffenburg, a two-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man were killed and three people were seriously injured. A 28-year-old Afghan, who was arrested, is suspicious. According to Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU), he was liable to leave.
A question of the “fire wall” about the AfD?
Merz emphasized: “We do not agree to a single AfD application because we get all the topics that we think is right.” The Union Chancellor complemented: “If you want to agree to these applications, you should agree. And if you reject it, you should reject it. I do not look right and not left. I just look straight on these questions.”
His attitude to the AfD is and remains clear, said Merz: “We don’t work with this party.” First of all, this means: “We do not go to a government with them. Second, we do not negotiate with those in the German Bundestag about any applications.” This also applies to the Sahra Wagenknecht BSW.
The CDU Presidium had made a decision in 2020, in which it was said: “The following applies to the CDU in Germany: There is no collaboration with the AfD-neither in direct nor in indirect form.” The decision continues to apply.
Demand for border controls
Merz has announced that as a Chancellor to instruct the Interior Ministry in office on the first day, permanently checking all borders and rejecting all illegal entry. This also applies to people with a right to protect. “There will be a factual ban on entry into the Federal Republic of Germany for everyone who does not have valid entry documents or which make use of European freedom of movement.” The EU asylum rules are dysfunctional. “Germany must therefore exercise its right to priority in national law,” said Merz.
Border controls can be arranged for a limited period in the Schengen area. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) has already implemented and announced this for all land borders to want to extend it beyond March 2025. The Union had already campaigned for the demand for flat-rate rejections after the presumably Islamist attack of Solingen in August, but there were legal concerns in the traffic light coalition.
SPD politician: “Not new and legally very questionable”
SPD parliamentary group vice Dirk Wiese told the German Press Agency that the complete closure of the German external borders contradicted the European idea that the federal police did not have enough staff for this. Green Chancellor candidate Robert Habeck warned Merz of every cooperation with the AfD. Left warns of agitation against foreigners
