“It’s urgent”: Steinmeier for dealing with Corona after the election

The first confirmed corona infections occurred in Germany five years ago. For Federal President Steinmeier, the process is far from over.
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is calling for a review of the Corona policy after the federal election – if necessary, he wants to initiate it himself. “If a new government and a new Bundestag actually do not dedicate themselves to this task, I will do so,” the head of state told the magazine “Stern”. “Reappraisal would create the opportunity to win back people who have lost their trust in democracy or at least doubt it.”
During this election period, a comprehensive review of the protective rules with masks, vaccinations and closures of schools or shops was not achieved. The Bundestag will be re-elected in just under a month.
Steinmeier sees a need for quick action: “After the new elections, we will have to agree very quickly on how to come to terms with it. It’s urgent.” According to his impression, the public’s expectations are high. However, when coming to terms with the crime, one should not “get lost in the superficial search for the culprit,” Steinmeier continued.
CDU open to reappraisal
“We have to be accountable to ourselves for what went well, what went less well, what did harm. Create transparency in the interest of all of us,” said Steinmeier. Five years ago there were the first confirmed corona infections in Germany. The CDU appeared open to dealing with the corona pandemic at the federal level. CDU deputy general secretary Christina Stumpp made corresponding comments in the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten”.
Steinmeier warned: “If we don’t work through it, then what has been repressed will remain.” That is much more dangerous. “Secrecy creates suspicion. And that’s something populists like to do with.”
