Google names Golf of Mexico – at least partially

In the United States, the Gulf of Mexico should be called differently in the future – at least for Google Maps users. This follows the internet giant of an announcement by the Trump government.
President Donald Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” by decree, at least in the USA. It is unclear whether the neighboring countries will accept the change. Nevertheless, Google has announced that it would change the name of the region in its map service as soon as it is official.
“We have a long -term practice to take over name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” said the company on platform X. This would be the case in the United States as soon as names change in the “Geographic Names Information System” database. Then Google Maps in the USA would quickly be updated to display the “Gulf of America”, according to Google.
Google shows both names in the rest of the world
If names differ between individual countries, the users of Google Maps each see the official local name, the company added. “Everyone sees both names in the rest of the world.”
A few days ago, the U.S. Ministry of the Interior said that the corresponding authority will quickly work on an update of the official name for the Gulf, which should now apply to the US federal level. This will implement a corresponding decree by President Donald Trump.
What do the states say about the Gulf of Mexico?
The name “Gulf of Mexico” for the gulf on the south coast of the United States has been used since the 16th century. The water not only borders on the US states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, but also on Mexico and Cuba.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum had already said before the decree was implemented that it was crucial what was on paper and not say Trump’s. For example, the decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico into “Golf of America”, according to the corresponding decision, expressly only applies to the mainland base of the USA.
After Trump’s announcement in the election campaign, Sheinbaum had already reacted with a humorous counter -proposal. The south of the United States can also be called “America Mexicana”, she said: “Sounds good, isn’t it?”
