The first drastic decisions of the new US government have an impact: the UN refugee aid Unhcr reacts.
After the US expenditure ban for international help, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) ordered a savings program.
“While we are still examining the effects of the decision of the new US government, including possible exemptions, we introduce a number of temporary precautions to alleviate the effects of this financing uncertainty,” said a spokeswoman on request.
Previously, the British newspaper “Guardian” quoted from an internal email, according to which UNHCR boss Filippo Grandi asked his colleagues to temporarily stop attitudes and orders of material as well as trips except for emergency aid. The UNHCR did not want to comment on the email.
The United States has around a fifth of the organization budget, which takes care of more than 120 million refugees worldwide with around 20,000 employees. In 2024, the United States paid a good two billion dollars (1.9 billion euros) to the UNHCR.
The US State Department announced the temporary stop of foreign aid on Sunday. Foreign Minister Marco Rubio had initiated a review of all foreign aid programs to ensure that they were efficient and agreed with the US foreign policy as part of President Donald Trump’s America-up-to-time agenda.
