AfD Chancellor candidate Alice Weidel was disturbed by a laser pointer in her speech in the Bundestag. She was blinded at the beginning of her speech, she said after her appearance in the debate after Chancellor Olaf Scholz RTL/NTV’s declaration of government. Afterwards, the parliamentary managing director of the AfD parliamentary group, Bernd Baumann, then apparently complained to the Bundestag Presidium. The laser pointer is said to have come from the grandstand.
Laser points are prohibited in the Bundestag. They can be perceived as a potential disruptive factor and used as a distraction during a session and speakers. Laser points are usually taken from the input checks, but they cannot always be found. Many are now in a very small version, according to the security authorities in the Bundestag.
Confusion about Alice Weidel
It is also possible that it is not a laser pointer, but another light source that looks similar. There is no light point on camera shots that Weidel show in her speech. There is also no moment of confusion in Weidel’s face, in which one could have observed a possible disorder.
A confirmation of the Bundestag Presidium for the incident is still pending. So far, it is also unclear, the use of a laser pointer could be confirmed or whether there were consequences.
Transparency note: The star is (like NTV) part of RTL-Germany.
