Security feeling wanks: increasing fear of attacks

The concern for acts of violence in their own country is growing, the view of the behavior of the United States in world events has changed. That is two of the most important findings from the security report 2025.

The German feeling of security has reached a new low point. This is shown by the results of a representative survey by the Allensbach Institute on behalf of the Center for Strategy and Higher Leadership. Accordingly, many people are currently worried that they could be victims of an act of violence.

The Russian war of attack against Ukraine, the renewed election of Donald Trump as US President and the precautions for war and disaster cases, which are inadequate from the majority of the majority, also contribute to this bad feeling.

According to the survey, the proportion of the population, which feels safe in Germany, fell by one percentage point to 60 percent compared to 2024. In 2019 to 2022, the value in the range between 71 and 82 percent was located. The concern for becoming an uninvolved victim of a violent crime rose from 14 percent in 2022 to 30 percent.

For the security report 2025, 1,015 people aged 16 and over had been interviewed between the 7th and 18th January – and thus before the fatal knife attack on a kindergarten group in Aschaffenburg.

Large majority sees the greatest danger to peace in Russia

According to the survey, 61 percent of Germans are currently worried that Germany can be involved in military conflicts. According to this, 79 percent of Germans believe that Russia is currently the greatest danger to peace in the world.

The proportion of people who are convinced by the USA is the greatest danger to peace worldwide, rose enormously from 2024 to this year’s survey – from 24 to 46 percent. “The Germans no longer believe in the United States as a reliable alliance partner,” said the founder of the center for strategy and higher leadership, Klaus Schweinsberg. The trust in NATO is still intact.

Few respondents see good preparation for disaster cases

The fact that Germany is well prepared for the war and disaster in the event of the information thinks only every tenth German citizen. 43 percent of the respondents said that Germany was “less well” prepared for such a situation. Another 39 percent even see your country “not at all well” prepared.

The citizens suspect deficits above all when it comes to emergency plans for health care in the event of a disaster, as well as the protection of important facilities against cyber attacks.

“The guarantee of security is one of the central tasks of the state and the citizens have the impression that there is a lack of consequence,” said Renate Köcher, Managing Director of the Institute for Demoscopy Allensbach.
