Donald Trump wants to accommodate criminal migrants in Guantánamo. Security expert Christian Mölling sees this an evasive maneuver by the American president.
The Berlin political scientist Christian Mölling sees one in the Guantánamo plans by US President Donald Trump “Attempt to show activism”. “Trump has already had problems with his new deportation practice in the past few days because the states said: We don’t just take them back”said Mölling in star– “The location – international”. If even such a small country as Colombia opposes the US President, this shows, “that you can’t just put it under pressure yourself”.
Trump’s announcement to arrest around 30,000 criminal migrants at the Guantánamo Bay US military base, the Bertelsmann Foundation expert is therefore evaluating as evasive maneuvers. “Guantánamo is a kind of valve”so Mölling. Trump and his people could say “You have gotten the people out of the USA”. Ultimately, Trump is only about reducing the number of migrants in his own country.
The United States has been maintaining a prison camp for alleged terrorists at Cuba since 2002, which repeatedly causes criticism internationally because of its freedom of legal freedom. Trump plans to have an additional camp built there for illegal migrants.
This was preceded by a dispute between Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro. Last weekend he initially refused to let two deportation trailers from the United States land on board in Colombia with Colombian refugees. Then Trump had threatened to go to Colombian goods with punitive tariffs of up to 50 percent. Petro had initially answered this with customs threats to American goods, but finally gave in.
What Trump for one “panacea” holds
“The threat of tariffs, which is nothing other than a form of sanctions, is currently the panacea that Trump imagines”judges Christian Mölling. But this is one “oblique idea because the states are different on it”. A small country like Colombia react more sensitively because it has greater dependence on the USA when it comes to ex- and import. “It looks different for us Europeans”so Mölling. You can compensate for some customs sanctions. Therefore, Trump could not already get Colombia’s steering as a victory. On the contrary: in the medium term he had to “mesh” Stand, even expect considerable difficulties.
“The belief that you can actually do everything uncooperatively, you don’t have to find any regulation with the other countries, leads to enormous problems”so Mölling. This could take revenge for Trump and his government: “Not in the first hundred days, but maybe in half a year.”
