Shortly after the election, Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs against Canada and Mexico – on the first day of the office. That didn’t happen. Now there is a new key date.
According to his spokeswoman, US President Donald Trump will hold on to goods from Canada, Mexico and China on the introduction of far-reaching tariffs. Tomorrow the president will introduce 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada and ten percent on goods from China, says Trump’s spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt in the White House. She just spoke to Trump about it in the Oval Office. Canada, Mexico and China would have made it possible to get illegal drugs to America, said Leavitt as a reason.
Donald Trump named February 1st as a key date
Trump originally wanted to introduce the corresponding tariffs on the day of his inauguration, but then moved away from it and named February 1st. It is open whether the punitive measures are still averted by negotiations behind the scenes.
Customs are a kind of surcharge to imported goods. They are due on the border. Trump had already put on tariffs during his first term from 2017 to 2021. Economists assume that far -reaching tariffs will lead to an increase in prices in the United States.
