Tens of thousands demonstrate for diversity and the “fire wall”

After the vote of the Union and AfD in the Bundestag, tens of thousands are on the streets throughout Germany. The protest should continue on Sunday. An ex-CDU member is expected as a speaker.

After the joint coordination of the Union and AfD in the Bundestag, tens of thousands of diversity and a clear delimitation went to the right. According to the police, 14,000 people took part in a demonstration in Essen alone. In Hamburg, the organizers spoke of 80,000 people – according to the police, 65,000 people came together. In many places, the protest was directed against the Union Chancellor candidate for the Bundestag election, Friedrich Merz (CDU).

“Pain after” was read on a banner in Cologne, others had crossed out the “C” of “CDU” or called “no Merz from March”. One participant wore a sign with the inscription: “Fritz hear on mom!”. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), who was sometimes called “Mutti” during her reign, had criticized Merz for the votes with the AfD.

Application with AfD as a trigger

The reason for the demonstrations is that the CDU and CSU had enforced an application to tighten migration policy on Wednesday in the Bundestag with the help of the AfD. For the first time, the AfD obtained a majority in the plenum. However, a draft law introduced by the Union to limit migration had failed on Friday.

Under the motto “Brandwomen instead of arson”, thousands also took to the streets in Leipzig to demonstrate against the migration policy of the Union and AfD. Co -organizer Bente Stork said in the direction of Union and Merz: “Anyone who cooperates with fascists must expect our resistance.” It is now up to everyone to be the fire wall and prevent history from repeating, Irena Rudolph-Kokot from the “Leipzig takes place”. “We have to prevent authoritarianism from abolishing democracy in our country.”

Ex-CDU member Friedman expected on demo

There was also demonstrated in other cities, including Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Braunschweig, Würzburg, Augsburg and Bremen. The protest will continue in many places on Sunday, for example in Berlin. Publicist Michel Friedman is also expected as a speaker for the demonstration there. He had left the party in protest to coordinate the Union with the AfD.

Elsewhere, the protest was directed directly against the AfD on Saturday. For example, a demonstration against an AfD campaign event in Neu-Isenburg in southern Hesse came together than initially assumed. The officials spoke of around 9,000 demonstrators. According to a police spokeswoman, participants tried to set up two police vehicles in the afternoon, and one of the vehicles was damaged.
