Donald Trump sends his husband for “special missions”, Richard Grenell, with two demands for Venezuela. After the trip, the US president reports success on both topics. At what price?
According to President Donald Trump, the United States has concluded an agreement on migration policy with Venezuela. The Venezuelan government has agreed to re -accept all citizens who had been illegally entered the United States and arrested there, Trump wrote on the Truth Social and X platforms. “Venezuela has also agreed to take over the return transport,” he continued.
The released Americans, who had been imprisoned in Venezuela, are now back in the USA, Trump emphasized. The Venezuelan government initially did not comment on a migration agreement, but only about the release.
Trump had sent his envoys for special missions, Richard Grenell, to Venezuela to urge President Nicolás Maduro to withdraw migrants who were illegally returned to the USA and reach the release of detained Americans. As is often the case, the Trump government linked the demands with the threat, otherwise there would be consequences.
After the talks, Grenell left the country with six released Americans. He spread several photos with the six men on X and criticized that they had received “zero support” from the previous government of the Democrat Joe Biden. The reason for the detention of the Americans in Venezuela was initially not known.
A controversial head of state
Maduro said about the talks with the United States: “There are topics that we have achieved first agreements.” He did not give details. He announced a “new beginning” in relationships with the USA, “in which everything that needs to be corrected is corrected and what needs to be done”.
The visit came less than a month after Maduro was sworn in for a third term – after an election overshadowed by allegations of fraud, nationwide protests and international criticism. The United States does not recognize Maduro’s claim to the election victory and, together with Canada, Great Britain and the EU, had imposed sanctions against high -ranking officials in the South American country.
In a television interview, the Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab now argued that Grenell’s visit formally meant that the US government is recognizing Maduro as President of Venezuela. Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in turn, warned of the broadcaster Fox News, he hoped that there were no concessions to the Venezuela government in this direction. The US government should not forget who Maduro is.
