Party exit, demonstrations and vandalism: The fact that the Union has accepted AfD votes in the Bundestag triggered violent reactions. CDU boss Merz is aimed at the demonstrators.
The CDU chairman Friedrich Merz appeals to behave peacefully in the protests against the Union. “I call up all those who are now protesting to do this peacefully,” warned the Union Chancellor candidate when visiting the hall for the election party conference this Monday in Berlin. It is the good right of every citizen to demonstrate. “However, this does not include violence, neither against people nor against things,” added Merz.
“Of course we also deal with peaceful demonstrators. We talk to the political opponent. We are carrying out the discussions where they belong, namely in the plenary of the German Bundestag,” emphasized Merz. “In this respect, this is a normal development that we now also have controversy in Germany.”
The Union’s course in migration policy and its Bundestag vote with the AfD have triggered broad protests. At the weekend, tens of thousands took to the streets in many German cities. The party congress on Monday is also likely to be accompanied by protests.
