US President Donald Trump has already announced punitive tariffs against China, Mexico and Canada. Olaf Scholz wants to react to possible US tariffs with European countermeasures.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has announced European countermeasures in the event that the United States will charge additional tariffs on EU goods.
“As a strong economic area, we can shape our things ourselves and can also react to customs policy with customs policies. We will and will do that,” said Scholz before the informal EU summit in Brussels. The goal should be at the end of a cooperation. “But it is clear that the prerequisite for understanding is that you know about your own strength. Europe can act.”
Trump has already raised tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico
US President Donald Trump had previously announced punitive tariffs for goods from China, Canada and Mexico and also threatened the EU because of the commercial surplus of countries like Germany. Scholz emphasized that both sides benefited from the exchange of goods and services. “If customs policy makes it difficult now, it would be bad for the USA, bad for Europe,” he said.
France’s President Emmanuel Macron commented similarly: If the EU was “attacked in trading topics, Europe would have to get respect and therefore react as a confident power,” he said. Poland Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that the EU had to “do everything to avoid these completely unnecessary and stupid tariff hurdles or trade wars.
Trump had decided on Saturday by decree tariffs of 25 percent for products from Canada and Mexico and once again threatened the Europeans with similar measures. These could severely harm Germany and especially the auto industry.
